Here's Proof Nike 24.7 Can Take You From The Gym to The Office to Girl's Night
2 pieces, 5 completely different looks.
I am on a mission to declutter my closet. This might come as a surprise, considering you clicked on this newsletter post, likely, because it’s about clothes. Stay with me.
I am on a mission to declutter my closet because I’m tired of stepping into my walk-in, surrounded by a ton of clothes and feeling like I have nothing to wear. I have dozens of shirts, many pairs of pants, and skirts in every length; theoretically, I should have plenty to wear, right?
Well, not necessarily.
The older I get, the more I realize that the notion of “less is more” rings true, especially when it comes to clothing. You can have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear if the pieces you own aren’t versatile.
This is one of my biggest style hurdles; I have a lot of “occasion” items, but not nearly enough occasions on my calendar to wear them all to, let alone wear them often. Can we also do away with the stigma that you have to wear a different outfit to every occasion? I’ve subscribed to this way of thinking for a while, but the more I think about it, the sillier it sounds. There are pieces in my closet that I love, that I feel amazing in, that I haven’t worn more than a handful of times because… why? Because I was photographed wearing them, and those photos made it to social media, and outfit repeaters have a bad rap? Who’s giving them that rap?
You heard it here first: From here on out, I want to be an outfit repeater. I want to wear my favorite pieces and, every time I look at them, connect them to the memories they hold.
That being said, however, being an “outfit repeater” doesn’t mean wearing a garment the same way every time you put it on your body. On the contrary, being an outfit repeater means reimagining the pieces in your closet every time you reach for them. Part of this is learning how to style, and part of it is investing in pieces that can be styled in a myriad of ways. That’s where the Nike 24.7 collection comes in.
There’s a reason Nike’s slogan is “Just do it.” The brand makes clothing meant to move with you. It’s latest collection, the 24.7 line, can take you from the gym to the grocery store, from mimosas at brunch to a company dinner. It’s comprised of pieces that are meant to be lived in, not worn once and forgotten about.
And trust me, you can’t forget about this collection. Not just because it’s a Nike exclusive, but because they’re so comfortable, you’ll want to find ways to wear them again and again. The brand was kind enough to send me two pieces from the line - the ImpossiblySoft Women's Dri-FIT Oversized 1/2-Zip Top ($110, nike.com) and PerfectStretch Women's Dri-FIT Pleated Skirt ($160, nike.com) - to see for myself just how versatile they are for the season ahead and beyond. Ahead, I share five ways I’d style them for spring and summer, but note that I could have come up with five, 10, even 15 more ways to switch up my look, with pieces I already own.
Outfit repeater? Just do it.
Look One: Elevated For The Office
The second I opened that PR package and saw the skirt’s brown hue in person, I knew I wanted to pair it with something green. I went with this olive top from Petal & Pup. The combination still felt sporty to me, so I added gold jewelry for a feminine touch, but kept with the athletic vibe with some off-white sneakers.
Look Two: Feelin’ Formal
I loved the contrast of Nike’s four-way-stretch skirt and this satin top that’s been collecting dust in my closet for years. The shiny fabric gave the skirt instant elegance; it’s the perfect pairing for going out to dinner or a semi-formal affair with a pair of sparkling gold heels and accessories.
Look Three: Running Errands in Style
I’m obsessed with a skirt and sneakers combo, and have been ever since I first noticed Sandra Bullock wearing white sneakers and a floral dress in Practical Magic. It feels very 90s, which makes me love the aesthetic even more, but Nike’s skirt is the pinnacle of modern athleisure, so the look doesn’t feel dated. Brown and this kind of brick-meets-plum colored tank bode well together, but because the colors are pretty bold, I kept my accessories simple: skinny silver hoops and a wrist full of Alex & Ani bangles.
Look Four: Dressed Up & Down
I once captioned an Instagram post “Life’s short; buy the shoes, wear the sweatshirt,” and in the photo I wore high heels and, you guessed it, a sweatshirt. I often think about that post, and how I was always pairing something comfy with something that met corporate dress code guidelines. I try to emulate that formula here, but even more clever, because that skirt is actually a mini-skort from Abercrombie. Sneakers were a given.
But let’s talk about this sweatshirt for a second, because when Nike dubbed this piece “ImpossiblySoft,” it wasn’t hyperbole. It’s comprised of 51% polyester, 25% modal, 15% cotton, and 9% spandex, which, together, add up to an extraordinarily comfortable top I could move in, work in, and sleep in - which I have.
Look Five: Gym-Goer
…Or, in my case, home gym-goer. We’re at that awkward stage of spring when it’s cool in the mornings and hot in the afternoon. Or, since we live in New Jersey, sometimes it’s just plain chilly because it’s not summer yet, and the Northeast weather forecast is wild. A sports bra and biker shorts or leggings are my go-to workout outfit formula, and this sweatshirt is the perfect shell on top.
